Using SharePoint Apps to deploy Host-Web Site Columns, Content Types, Lists / Libraries, and SubSites

Hi all,

My background is mostly on developing SharePoint Farm Solutions and am having a hard time transitioning to developing SharePoint Apps. We are going with SharePoint Apps because the environment we're developing on is SharePoint Online.

Before, we always use Farm Solutions and Features / Feature Receivers when provisioning Site Columns, Site Content Types, Lists / Libraries, and Sub Sites for our Site Collection.

Looking at the PnP Samples and http://www.sharepointnutsandbolts.com/2013/05/sp2013-host-web-apps-provisioning-files.html, it seems that I can still provision common artifacts using SharePoint Apps.

However, I would like to know if this is the best practice or if there are other solutions? I would have preferred using a Sand box solution but Microsoft discourages against it because it is already 'deprecated'.

Lastly, I noticed that when I deploy these Apps to my Site Collection, even "Read" users can go to the app and click the buttons shown! This is not a very good scenario. I can't even set / hide the App. What do I do with the app? After it is finished 'provisioning', as a Site Admin, do I just uninstall the App so it cannot be used again?

Thank you!
